There are certain restaurants you visit and think, “Yeah, that was pretty good.”
Then there are the places where you're halfway through your meal and already thinking about when you're coming back.
Fat Milo’s All Day Cafe in Sherwood was definitely the second kind.
A few weeks ago, Kimberli and I stopped at Fat Milo’s for breakfast. I ordered the chicken-fried steak, and I'm going to make a pretty bold statement:
It was the best chicken-fried steak I have ever had.
And yes, I've had plenty of chicken-fried steak. 😂
This Isn't Your Average Chicken-Fried Steak
Fat Milo’s makes theirs with fresh cube steak that's hand-battered and fried, covered with country sausage gravy and served with two eggs and red potatoes.
Simple enough.
But sometimes simple food done really well is exactly what makes a restaurant memorable.
The breading, steak and gravy all came together perfectly. This wasn't one of those breakfasts where you finish eating and immediately forget about it.
A few weeks later, I'm apparently writing an entire blog post about it.
That probably tells you something.
More Than Just a Great Breakfast
After our visit, I started looking into Fat Milo’s a little more.
They're a family-owned neighborhood cafe that has been serving the area for nearly 15 years. Their philosophy is basically farm-to-table meets comfort food, with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
They also make many of the things they serve from scratch, including sauces, dressings, biscuits and soups.
That commitment to local ingredients goes pretty deep. Fat Milo’s lists Oregon and Northwest producers among its suppliers for produce, meats, seafood, baked goods and other ingredients.
I love seeing local restaurants supporting other local businesses.
What Else Is On the Menu?
Here's my problem:
Now I need to go back.
Their breakfast menu includes fried chicken & waffles, biscuits & gravy, huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, pancakes and bourbon French toast.
Then there's the Breakfast Grilled Cheese — thick-cut brioche dipped in their bourbon French toast mix with lemon goat cheese, Gruyère and cheddar, topped with a fried egg.
Yeah.
I might have just figured out what I'm ordering next time.
Although walking into Fat Milo’s and not ordering that chicken-fried steak again is going to require some serious self-control.
Put Fat Milo’s On Your List
One of the things I enjoy about living in the Willamette Valley is discovering places like this.
Some are restaurants. Some are small businesses. Sometimes it's a park, winery, event or someplace completely unexpected.
That's also why I started sharing Kyle’s Local Picks.
Real estate is what I do for a living, but communities are about a whole lot more than houses.
They're about the places we eat, the businesses we support, the people we meet and those little spots we eventually start referring to as “our place.”
Fat Milo’s earned a spot on my list.
If you're in Sherwood — or you're looking for an excuse for a little breakfast road trip — give them a try.
And yes…
Get the chicken-fried steak.
Then come back and tell me whether I'm right.
